Honorable Mention
Louisiana Alive
Dane Hebert

She surveys the damage of their latest tropical storm:

the chickens drowned in the yard without a peep
when floodwaters invaded Pointe-aux-Chenes
and found its way into their home.

She was only able to save the dogs.

Their bed floated to the Gulf of Mexico
and now likely sleeps a family of migrant workers
for next year’s crop harvest in California.

She raises a glass to their good fortune.

Life is like that on Shrimpers Row – they never know
when water will breach the levee and inch its way
onto their Isle de Jean Charles property.

She howls a heart-rending cry.

Aside from opening the floodgates to let some water out,
there is little she can do besides wait
for the floodwaters to subside.
